As a film enthusiast and a media college grad i know two things one I there are very through jobs and two the weirder the film the more likely we are to study it. yet though out my education no one ever mentioned this film to me.
I actually unintentionally found it through a meme I have often seen this image floating around tumbler and on Instagram memes.
As most Brits would i presumed it was from one of those questionable shakespear 60's film adaptations like the one where romeo looks like he could have won a troy Bolton look a like contest or the one where a headless Macbeth gets an unreasonable amount of air time for just falling down the stairs. Raver ignorantly on my part i was totally unaware of the Czechoslovakian film maker jaromil jires or the original books author.
Stylistically the film is beautify very much fitting today's angel and cottage core aesthetic in its dream sequences then suddenly turning very Gothic in others.
the sound track its totally enchanting and really helps link another wise confusing plot together. which leads me on to my negative. now surrealist films are weird that is not debatable but i feel like there was a lot of complicated charter relationships that where not really explored, maybe to prevent breaking up the dream like haze and flow of the film, but still i feel maybe even some quick little interactions towards the end may have stopped me leaving the film feeling uneasy and baffled.
As a Film of this genre, which if i had to sum up in layman's terms would be horny vampire core, theirs a lot of nudity from everyone. over all i am a pretty open person so the occasional casual boob was not a problem however i am not really sure why Valerie a 13- 14 year old had to be so promiscuous at times. Know its no where near Lolita territory tho that the only film i feel is comparable in this context as although many people tell her she is a 'fair maiden' its often her who instigates most of the uncomfortable interactions.
Over all its a good weird watch if your in to controversial cinema and like pole cats with earrings ( which i am aware will make no sense to any of you unless you watch it and probably will not afterwards as well).
